PRACTICAL INFORMATION
Contrary to the image that the word often conjures up for many people, orienteering is not all about tramping the hillsides wearing a cagoule and carrying a rucksack, though the navigational skills required may well be pretty similar. True orienteering is a competitive sport – a cross country race over a set course, designed to test the runner’s ability with map and compass – affectionately known to its aficionados as “cunning running.” Having said that, it is a very inclusive pastime and going all-out to win is certainly not obligatory – leaving the way for many to jog or even walk around the course – which almost certainly accounts for Orienteering growing in popularity as a holiday activity.
What’s On Offer?
For a challenging outdoor orienteering sport which sets out to exercise the body and the mind, you obviously need somewhere which provides some suitably challenging outdoors! Bulgaria has long been a favoured spot for orienteering, the variety of forest, meadows and mountain scenery and the country’s newly established family holiday/tourist industry making an ideal combination. From the rugged valley of Tundja to the peaks of the Sakar/Strandja mountains, there are plenty of orienteering opportunities on offer.
Navigation instruction in Bulgaria
Navigation errors are often the precursor of further problems when out on the hill. Do you carry a compass around with you all day but don't really know how to use it? Do you ever wander off the beaten track or would you be able to find your way to safety in horrible weather in unfamiliar country? The art of navigation is not such a black art as you may think. Introductory orienteering courses start at the very beginning, a very good place to start. The Sakar/Strandja mountains, with their varied and sometimes complex terrain are perfect places to learn how to wield your map and compass. On our navigation courses, the map is thoroughly introduced and then used, not just stuck in a rucksack pocket. The compass and its mysteries are then explored and all essential skills are practiced. Depending on the time of year and conditions, a night navigation exercise can be included.
If you've done a little bit of navigation and want to brush up on existing skills then look at further strategies we can cater for you.
